Entertaining kids over the Christmas and New Year break from school and nursery can be tricky. Your little ones can be quite energetic, especially when there’s no nursery play time to burn all of that energy off. As a parent or carer as much as we love getting to spend more time with them, entertaining kids can be difficult! Having a list of activities you can do together is a great way to prepare for the break, knowing that when you hear that dreaded “I’m bored” or someone getting a little cranky from too much time doing nothing, you have the perfect back up plan.
At Barncliffe Day Nursery we are experts in entertaining kids, keeping their little minds occupied to tire them out and help them learn. We’ve put together a list of activities we know your little one will love to do, and you can get involved too! Keep reading for some great activities for you and the children to do over the holidays.
Keeping your Kids Entertained
Getting creative is a great way to keep your kids entertained. This can be done through a variety of activities, whether you draw, paint or mold, your little ones are bound to keep busy for hours. If you’re still on the run up to Christmas, try making some cards to give around to friends and family, there’s always an added touch of special when something is homemade! You can also make some decorations to go around the house or on your tree, a great addition to a festive home.
A great way of entertaining kids is to make some yummy treats. The best part is after all the hard work you can reward yourself and your little one by eating them all! Cookies are a great choice, buy some fun cutters to make interesting shapes. Try making some fun Christmas characters and decorating them with icing and sweets, yum!
As much fun as it is cosying up at home, it is important to spend some time in the fresh outdoors when entertaining kids. Wrap up warm and head to your nearest park for a bit of fresh air and playtime for the children, the perfect place to get out all of that built up energy. If you’re feeling extra enthusiastic, head out on a walk in the countryside for some beautiful views. Take a flask of hot chocolate and some snacks for any pit stops along the way.
For a little treat you could go on a fun family outing to one of the local activity centres. Ice skating is particularly appropriate for the Christmas break, adding that winter feel to a fun family activity. For extra Christmas spirit, look for a Christmas market that has an ice rink there so you can skate around and then browse the stalls.
If skating isn’t for you then you can try something else, such as going to one of your local indoor play areas. This is a great place for your kids to get in some social time with children of a similar age, while sending their imagination wild in the play area. This can be particularly useful for the colder days when you can’t face the outdoors!
Playing games of all varieties is a fantastic method of entertaining kids. Whether it’s online or a board game, the whole family can get involved and enjoy! With the rise of technology there are some great interactive games out there for you to all enjoy and work together to complete! If this isn’t your style then you can stick to the old school board games, an amazing invention that really brings us all together to sit and enjoy each others company. Children will enjoy the adults playing with them, making them feel involved in the Christmas celebrations.
